History

From the mill to an inn

Corn and grain for the farmers nearby were ground at the former mill in the Middle Ages. The Höldrichsmühle was officially registered as an inn in 1786.

Franz Schubert in the Höldrichsmühle

Franz Schubert visited the Höldrichsmühle a number of times. Here, in the romantic setting of the former inn, under a linden tree, he was allegedly inspired to his famous melody “The Lindentree”. Today, the Schubert memorial is a tribute to his work.

Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller

A famous Austrian painter, Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, used the Höldrichsmühle as a setting in numerous paintings. The main building, as parts of it remain today, can be recognized in the paintings “Christmas morning in the Höldrichsmühle”, “The Bride’s Farewell from Home” and “Peasant Wedding in Lower Austria”. Copies of these paintings are exhibited in the restaurant of the Höldrichsmühle. Originals can be seen in the wonderful rooms of the Austrian Gallery in the Belvedere in Vienna.

Biedermeier: Discovering the beauties of nature

The landscape of the southern Vienna Woods has been a popular resort area for Viennese citizens for centuries. It was here where the artists of the Biedermeier era were fascinated by the beauty of the nature. Visits to the beautiful countryside were popular not only with Franz Schubert and his friends, but also with Ludwig van Beethoven, who highly praised the Hinterbrühl valley. Since 2005, the area is protected by UNESCO as a biosphere park.

Ferdinand Raimund and many other artists used to undertake excursions and walks through the countryside. One of the popular places to stop for food and drink was the Höldrichsmühle.

The countryside 4 stars hotel in the Vienna Woods in Lower Austria informs about accommodation, the restaurant, activities like horseback riding and mountain biking, arrangements for celebrations & festivities, seminar facilities and premises, excursions in the Wienerwald as well as holiday packages.
